I'm writing scripts to organize all my email dating back to 1995 (so far... I'm still looking for usenet posts back to 1990 on google, and I'd love backup tapes from my college email, but I'm not going to hold my breath on those.)
According to my old email, on this day in Ryan's life, in...
1995: A salesguy I didn't particularly like, and my old roommate from Iowa got axed from the old radio station I worked at, each of them for being generally disagreeable and semi insane with conspiracy theories. This news rocked the Eastern Iowa radio professionals community. People in New York didn't seem to be affected.
1996: I was reeling 'cause of the cute geek-girl from Boston I'd recently met at a hacker convention in Philly that I attended with the "2600 crowd". I later went up to Boston to see her... yeah, that went well. hooo boy. Word to the wise: hacking and macking do not mix.
1997: I was in Washington DC, celebrating the pending sale of Robbie and Eliot's radio stations (in the end, they only sold one), and their new entry into the Eastern Iowa Millionaire's club. Rob called a bunch of old pals, and we gathered at the country club near DC to drink, talk radio, and bowl, duckpin-style. We did lots of each. I took the train, and it was cool.
1998: I was writing to Clay Shirky about his article about "redundant arrays of inexpensive servers" (a new idea at the time), telling him I *had* this at StarMedia... it's this new thing called a "load balancer"... exotic stuff at the time. I was also planning my 30th birthday party and commerating the 24th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
1999: I was playing with my new SparcBook (Sun laptop), and planning a trip to Argentina for around Thanksgiving. I had dinner plans with more Iowans who were living there at the time. We Iowans jet set, don'cha know.
2000: Planned a Rat-Pack-style Thanksgiving with Beth, Rudy, Heif, and a bunch of other NYC yuppies in Las Vegas. This was the most surreal Thankgiving ever. The waiter's hot-dog joke is forever burned in my mind. No, I won't share it.
2001: I was in Barcelona (wow, this excersise makes me sound REALLY worldly! If only it were true.) ... I have a lot of really good email for early Nov. 2001, 'cause I spent a lot of it in a cyber-cafe on the banks of the Mediteranian Sea, emailing and IM'ing Maggie who I'd recently smooched after game 5 of the World Series. The 7-hour time difference made it interesting.
2002: wrote this in my blog. woo.
See, now I'm gonna but you to tell me the hot-dog joke...
Posted by: Maggie on November 9, 2002 04:04 PMi never went (nor was invited) to vegas for thanksgiving. ??
Posted by: heif on November 11, 2002 09:13 AMreally? there were many other current and former i-traffickers there... i thought you were there, too. Strange. About 12 people went, and were impossible to coordinate schedules with. We discussed the product development of the "vega-beeper", a rental pager you'd get at the airport specifically for rounding up a group of people. I thought you (heif) were part of that conversation. I'm apparently blurring together other vegas trips in my mind's eye.
